Platform. While that word conjures up delightful visions of dangerously high 70’s shoes, it also brings a whole other vibe that feels icky: self-promotion. Ew. Many mystical authors feel squeamish just thinking about it.
I used to be that way. In fact, I resisted the internet for a long time. Finally, my children got sick of my Luddite ways and gave me a computer. It took a few years, but I eventually built a website and started marketing. When I did that, my business exploded.
I was hesitant because I lacked marketing know-how and didn’t want to feel like a shill. Imposter syndrome was rearing its ugly head, too. But the real reason: I am deeply introverted. The idea of a “platform” seemed like an intrusion into my private world. Marketing felt like something a gross salesperson would do (images of Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross come to mind).
Here’s the stone-cold truth: platform building isn’t about marketing schemes and sales funnels. It’s actually more about connecting.
